"The rocky ledge runs far out into the sea
Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine is one of the nations oldest and most well known lighthouses. It has been the subject of many things, including paintings, stamps, photographs and even poetry. On Christmas Eve 1886 the British bark Annie C. Maguire ran ashore, crashing on the rocks just off of Portland Head. If you look closely at the rocks you will see an inscription: "In memory of the ship Annie C. Maguire, wrecked here, Dec. 24, 1886" This is one of my favorite spots in all of Maine. The sound of waves breaking against the rocks, the smell of salt in the air, amazing views of the rocky coast which has made Maine famous, the beauty of this place amazes me every time I visit here. |
